Basic Piano Skills

This week's tip is simple...learn some basic piano skills to become a better guitarist.

It's true. Spending some time at the piano will open your eyes/ears/mind to fresh musical ideas that you can take to the guitar. Also, any music theory concepts that you study are so much easier to "see" on the piano than on the guitar.

The piano is a two-dimensional instrument. Go left, notes get lower in pitch; go right and they get higher. Compare that to the guitar where the strings are basically like 6 keyboards stacked diagonally. This three-dimensional complexity is both a blessing and a curse.

Here are some of the basic piano skills you should work on in order to increase your overall musicianship.

  • Major Scales
  • Minor Scales
  • Diatonic Chord Scales
  • Major and Minor Triads and their Inversions
  • ii V I Progressions using Smooth Voice Leading

Over time, the piano will give you "light bulb" moments. Moments of musical breakthrough. Your task then is to take what you've learned at apply it to the guitar.
