Second, it's beneficial to your improv chops because it introduces the concept of super-imposing a minor 7 arpeggio built from the 5th of the chord you're soloing over (a minor 7 over a d minor chord in this case). This expands the harmony to include some upper extensions - A (5th of D) C (minor 7th of D) E (9th of D) G (11th of D).
