Session Guitarists - Endless Inspiration

This installment of Tuesday Tips is aimed at those of you who are looking for fresh ideas for your playing and your tone. I've found that actively listening to different session guitarists is a great way to find inspiration. After all, they play on all the records for a reason...they're amazing!

Here's the process I use.

1. Go to allmusic.com and do a search for a session guitarist you are interested in. Select the Credits tab to see a listing of projects this player has contributed to.

2. Get on Spotify and create a new playlist for this specific session guitarist. Search for albums listed on this player's allmusic.com credits and add them to the new playlist.

3. Listen. Specifically, listen to the use of effects, humbuckers vs. single coils, layered guitar parts, pick vs. fingers and anything else you can think of. This type of listening is best done on a nice set of speakers or headphones.

I'll leave you with a list of some of the session guitarists who have inspired (and continue to inspire) me.
