Growth as a guitarist comes by meeting challenges head on. When you first start out it's a challenge just to hold the pick. After a few years you'll meet new challenges like soloing over complex changes or mastering difficult techniques like sweep picking.
The fact is, as long as you challenge yourself, you'll continue to improve as a musician. As soon as you stop, your improvement slows down.
There's a great competition going on right now on David Wallimann's Youtube channel called the Guitar Playback and Palmer Melodic Backing Track Challenge. The basic idea is simple: download the provided backing track, create a melodic solo, record it, and submit your video as a video response to Wallimann's video which you can see HERE.
The reason I like this competition so much is that it is doable by anyone, whether you've been playing guitar for a few months or several years. It's not a shredding contest. It's about creating a memorable melody.
I highly recommend that you give it a shot. You have until June 10th to submit your video. Several prizes will be given including a Palmer amp head for the grand prize winner.
You can see my video entry HERE. Since this is a contest judged on the strength of your melodic theme, I went for a Jeff Beck meets Michael Thompson kind of a sound. I also played fingerstyle for a more organic tone.
You've got about a week and a half to submit your video. When you do, I'd love for you to drop a link in the comments section below. Time to step up and take the challenge!
